Editing instruments

• Oct 1, 2014 - 17:48

I'm editing a score made up of different sections, some of them instrumental and some voice. The score has been extracted from a pdf and in Musescore the instruments are simply "Instrument 1", "Instrument 2", etc. I've discovered how to change the instruments but not how to break the score up so that in some sections the treble staff can be "Soprano" and in others "Violin". I've tried using section breaks but they don't do what I expected. Thanks in advance.

Without seeing the original score, I think what you want is separate staves for the different instruments then Style / Edit General Style / Hide Empty Staves so that only the instruments you want at any given point are visible.

What I'm suggesting is *not* using the same staff for different instruments. That's not really good practice. Use different staves for different instruments, and Hide Empty Staves if you wish to save space by showing only the instruments in use at any point.

If that doesn't help, could you show where specifically in the score you posted you feel Hide Empty Staves would not do what you want (and also explain in more detail what you actually do want)? From where I sit, it looks like you *are* using Hide Empty Staves, and it is working perfectly. What do you wish to see differently?

I realise that using the same staff for different instruments isn't good practice, but that's how it's come out when extracted from a pdf. I can see that creating new staves/instruments would work but I was hoping to avoid the work!
I suppose the only reason I want the correct instrument/stave match is so that the playback sounds reasonable (and possibly to extract parts).
I may well leave it as it is depending on time.
Many thanks!

Getting playback right and having the generated parts make sense are indeed two excellent reasons to get the right instrument on the right part. Also, it gives you more flexibility if the layout or anything else changes such thatat some point, you do end up needing to show both staves at once.

Shouldn't be too much work, especially using 2.0 Beta 1 where copy and paste is more functional.

Assuming you mean the original pdf file, I've attached it. The section my current problems relate to is pages 16 to 18.
I've added instruments and cut and pasted the parts and it certainly sounds better! Converting from the original pdf and importing into Musescore (which I originally did so I could translate the lyrics) has been a fascinating exercise and (with the help of your team) I have learnt a lot. But it has taken a long time!
Many thanks for all your help.
