The notes eventually stop playing for me. Why? (Musescore 4)

There is something strange going on. Initially, after bar 3, the sound would not play anymore for me. I saved it, uploaded here, and now the sound lasts until the last bar, but if I add another whole note and tie to the previous notes, it stops playing before that. So that means I can only have proper playback on ties if I save, exit and re-enter the app.

Update: Added more ties, saved and exited the app, and then they play fine. However, if I add another whole note with a tie, it will not play it, and I need to save and exit the app in order for the playback to play it correctly, which is still an inconvenience.

OK. It's even stranger than that. Write 4 quarter notes in a measure and tie them. MuseScore plays the first to tied together and then doesn't sound the last to at all. Select the measure, hit "T" and the ties go away (as they should). Hit "T" again and playback is correct. Try it on your example after you add notes with ties that don't work. Select the range of notes that are tied (including the new ones), hit "T" and hit "T" again.
I don't know if this has been reported on GitHub.

I don't know if it's a bug or a feature, but in order to add ties, I must use the "Tie" icon in the toolbar at the top of the screen. If I try to use I get a tie symbol on the score, but it is non-functional. See attached screen shots.

I think the thing you are looking at in the palette is a slur. Mouse over it and you should see a tooltip that identifies it. Indeed, there is no tie in the palette (at least not in mine).

Slurs and ties look similar but have very different uses. Ties only work between notes of the same pitch and indicate that the second note is just a continuation of the first note. Slurs work between notes of any pitch and generally indicate a smoother transition from one note to another. Where slurs are used between notes of the same duration it generally indicates a slight or softer re-articulation of the note. So if you use a slur instead of tie by mistake, you will indeed hear the second note being re-articulated

Note that you can also add a tie with keyboard shortcut T. In note input mode after entering the first note use it after selecting the duration of the note you want to tie to. Outside note input mode if you have two adjacent notes of the same pitch you can add a tie between them by selecting the first note and similarly press T on your keyboard (or click on the tie in the tool bar).
