Muse Sounds keep getting removed from Musescore 4

• Jun 10, 2023 - 14:08

For some reason when I open a score, Muse Sounds are replaced by the default soundfont. Despite Muse Sounds being present in the file directory, I end up having to redownloading them from Musehub to get Musescore to recognize them again. Is there any way I can prevent this from occurring? Sometimes I end up having to go through this process multiple times a day.

Not exactly. Whichever of the MuseSounds is affected at the time won't show up in the sound panel of mixer view. So if the woodwinds are affected, I'll just see MS Basic instead in the sound panel and Muse Woodwinds will be missing from the available sounds.

I'm trying to establish where the break down is. Do you show Muse Sounds to be active in View/Playback Setup?
In any given score, are there some instruments that only can load Basic sounds, and others that can load Muse Sounds? Or is it all one or the other for the entire score?

As far as I know, I've always had Muse Sounds active and set to be the default option in the Playback Setup. Usually, it's just one or a few instrument sections that are affected (strings, brass), but there have been times when I've had to download most or all of the sounds.

You said this happens when you open a score. Is this a score you downloaded or a score you created yourself using the new score dialogue in MU4? If you open a downloaded score, there might be problems if the exact same name as in MU4 is not used. If a staff is labeled "Violin Section" in the score, MuseSounds has no instrument named "Violin section", so it reverts to the closest thing in Basic.

OK. I opened this score and the only instruments that loaded Basic sounds were the Dizi and Pipa. That is to be expected because there are no Muse Sounds for those instruments. I put a few random notes in the first measure. Open this score and tell me what instruments didn't load Muse Sounds.

My suggestion would be to:
1. try a factory reset. Select it from the Help tab in MU4.

and/or

Try repair install. If your are using Windows find it at,
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features, select MuseScore 4 and then the repair option.

The problem with uninstall can be that it doesn't always get rid of everything. Sometimes the thing that causes a problem is the thing that doesn't get deleted.
If you are on windows, I would suggest running a good Registry cleaner, like Ccleaner. And just run the registry part of it. After the uninstall and before reinstall. I do this myself, once in a while.
