baroque trill with "+" instead of "tr"?

• Jul 1, 2023 - 14:38

In Baroque music, it's common to denote a trill with a "+" above the note (instead of "tr"), and the convention is that it is almost always played starting on the note above the one marked (like a kind of appoggiatura). Is there a way to use this trill symbol in Musescore (other than by entering and placing text manually, which is not practical for a long score with numerous trills)? I couldn't find it in the ornaments or accents palettes.

The usual answer to requests like this starts with a question: _
"Does the symbol already exist in the Standard Music Font Layout (SMuFL)?"_

That's because MuseScore tries only to implement elements which have been researched and given a standard Unicode entity by smufl.org

Have a look at these SMuFL web pages:
Common ornaments: https://www.w3.org/2019/03/smufl13/tables/common-ornaments.html
Precomposed trills and mordents: https://w3c.github.io/smufl/latest/tables/precomposed-trills-and-morden…

Perhaps you need the "Shake" + symbol from "Other baroque ornaments"?

You can find this Shake symbol in MuseScore's Master palette under the Symbols section (search for Shake). But as regards implementing the playback, you would have to detail exactly how the ornament should play - and you would also need to reconcile the disparity between your description ("Trill") and the SMuFL definition ("Shake"). You might even have to create a discussion on SMuFL in order to clarify this:
