Re: Different Spacing

• Jul 6, 2023 - 02:38

How do I set different spacing for group of instruments vs. between groups? For example (see attached image and sorry I don't even know how to call the different "spaces"), I like to reduce the space between the different instruments, but increase the space marked by red. Like to do this not manually but by changing the style or settings. Appreciate your advice.

The groups you refer to are called "systems", so what you want to increase is the minimum system distance, in Format / Style / Page. Note that MuseScore automatically stretches things out to fill the page if there is room, and my guess is if you turn that distance up much, you won't be able to fit two systems on the page anymore, but if that's the goal, this is how to accomplish it.

If you need further help, please attach the actual score instead of just a picture, so we can understand and assist better.

Thank you for you advice, Marc. I did try the "system distance". But it applies to all "distance". I enclose an example of what I was trying to achieve in terms of layout (I inserted a vertical frame to show what I was trying to achieve, but know that's not the right way to do it, and hope there is a better way to do it throughout a whole score.).

The problem with this score is that you disabled justification. That should not be done except for very special unusual situations, as it actually has a bad effect on spacing overall. In this case, it leaves a huge gap at the bottom of this page, and it will do so on all other pages as well, with different size gaps on different pages.

The correct answer is re-enable vertical justification. Then the music will be properly spaced to fill the page the way any professional engraver would do, automatically. I see, though, you also decreased the music top & bottom margin. That generally isn't a good idea, so I'd recommend resetting those unless you had some special reason for that.
