I can't get MuseScore 4 to Replace MuseScore 3

• Jul 26, 2023 - 10:27

I have created some scores using MuseScore 3. Now I'm trying to upgrade to MuseScore 4 and can't get there. I hope that someone can help.
I have downloaded the new MuseScore Hub, clicked on the Musescore 4 download button and (after four attempts) finally saw a screen congratulating me on being current with the new program. Then I opened, in MuseScore 4 (and labeled as such), a score previously created in Musescore 3, edited it and saved it to the cloud. When I now try to open that score, though, I repeatedly get one of two messages, either that (1) my document is "processing and will be displayed when ready" (which never happened although I waited for 10 minutes on two different occasions), or (2) my document is not displayed because I made changes to it using an old program and I need to update to the new version, which I have done. I even downloaded Musescore 4 again and got the same results. In addition, on several occasions (when I did not get one of those two messages), the unedited score, still in MuseScore 3, is displayed, and I can't seem to find the edited MuseScore 4 document anywhere. My computer start page still shows the MuseScore 3 icon, and not the one for MuseScore 4.
I'm thinking that I should perhaps just delete that score entirely (and maybe my others as well), delete the MuseScore program itself (whichever versions or versions are living in my PC) and
start again from scratch, rather than try to diagnosis and fix the problem. That might be quicker and less frustrating, although highly annoying, but this is a mess. I would like to avoid that, and would be grateful if some kind soul could bring me back into the light with a more elegant solution.
Anyone?

No need to do that!
You state that you are using MS4 to save to the cloud a score previously saved in MS3.

Probably you can get round the apparent conflict by opening the score in MS4, then noting the contents in File > Score properties > Source and deleting the contents. Leave the Source field blank.

When you now save to the cloud, this operation will create a new instance of the score in the cloud. And after the Save you can check File > Score properties > Source to see that it really is a different score from the old version saved previously.

"My computer start page still shows the MuseScore 3 icon, and not the one for MuseScore 4."
I can only comment about Windows, but it sounds as if your operating system is still associating a file with suffix .mscz with MuseScore 3. Although I have both MS3 and MS4 installed , I have deliberately set my Windows laptop to open .mscz files in MS 3.6.2 by default (not in MS 4.1). That's because I still use MS 3.6.2 for all my production work.

Someone will probably point to better articles on file association, but here are some links.

DanielR,
Thanks a lot for your two replies. I believe that I will be able to follow the suggestions in your first post and, with some more thought (and perhaps some help from my "IT guy") that I will be able to understand and apply the information in your second post as well.
For the time being, however, there is good news. Overnight, a new MuseScore 4 shortcut icon has appeared on my Windows 10 start screen, apparently without human intervention, and I have been able to access the score that I began in MS 3 then edited and saved in MS 4. It is odd, though, because I see two different versions of the same score on the MS 4 "thumbnail sketch" document-selection screen, one (saved to the cloud) showing my latest changes, and another (without the cloud symbol) NOT reflecting the new edits. Is this normal? Should I delete the unedited document?
Also, can I delete the MS 3 program from my PC, or will that wipe out the other scores that I previously created in MS 3?
