Musescore 4.1.1 Playback broken (squeaky sound, way too high)

• Aug 15, 2023 - 19:43

After installing the update to 4.1.1 (Musescore reports version 4.1.1.232071203), score playback behaves strangely. All notes sound squeaky and also several octaves too high (regardless of using MuseSounds or MS Basic as the soundfont, also regardless of the instrument selected).
Applies to playback of completely new scores and also existing ones, which played normally before the update.
Playback still works normally with Musescore 3, so probably it is not a sound driver issue or similar.
Audio interface is a Focusrite Scarlet 18i20 (2nd gen), driver version 4.102.4.
Windows version is 10.0.19045 Build 19045.

Edit: Problem is not only during score playback, but also when clicking on single notes and hearing them.
Also the tempo for the score playback is not the same as before. It is played back way too fast now, it does not fit at all to the set tempo in the score.

But it could be a setting in the Focusrite. Try disconnecting it and see what happens. There are some bitrate settings to try as well as turning off Exclusive mode in your sound settings.

I tried the following now without success:
Enabling and disabling exclusive mode did not bring any difference.
The sample rate was already set to 44.1kHz, I tried different sample rates with no success (also different bit widths, 16 and 24).
Also tried reinstalling Musescore 4 and also the Focusrite drivers, no success.

I had this problem now randomly appear and disappear over time.
When playing around with the sampling rate of my Focusrite, I noticed that it sometimes only works with 48kHz together with MuseScore, sometimes only with 44.1kHz.
I believe this is a bug in the MuseScore sound output.
Is there a setting anywhere to fix the sample rate which MuseScore uses?

Thanks for pointing out the audio issues page. I tried different buffer sizes and changing the interface from 'system default' to the Focusrite. I also tried again different settings in the sound control panel (exclusive mode on/off, different bit widths). Unfortunately, it did not help.

How could I go below 44.1kHz? This is already the lowest settings in the Focusrite control panel.

What I also find strange: The change from 48kHz to 44.1kHz is a change of less than 10% in sample rate. However, the playback pitch and speed in Musescore changes from normal to something at least double.

When I disconnect the Focusrite, I do not have sound anymore to check ;-) Sorry.
But I tried Musescore 4 also on a laptop which has built-in audio, and it works normally (at least at the moment, as said, the problem seems to sometimes disappear and then comes back).

Yes, I cannot test that since I do not have another audio interface lying around.

Also another observation:
Contrary to my previous statement, it does NOT work correctly when changing the sample rate. It sounds more normal, but the pitch is still off by roughly a semitone when setting 48 kHz (just noticed this).
This is probably attributed to the 10% change from 44.1kHz to 48kHz.
When setting 44.1kHz, playback is very fast and the pitch extremely high.
In summary, the problem still persists regardless of any settings.
