Changing page margins in MS4 - Change in one setting changes it in another (urgent)

• Sep 20, 2023 - 02:07

(This is only urgent as I need to meet a deadline, so any help would be appreciated)

So I need to edit the page margins for a score that I'm getting bound. It is an orchestra score, and since it's double sided and will be spiral bound, I need the page margins on the EVEN PAGES to be different than margins on the ODD PAGES. The current margins are fine for the odd pages, however I would like to edit the ones on the even pages, SPECIFICALLY THE RIGHT SIDE margins. When I go into page settings and adjust right side page margins on even numbered pages, the same edit automatically happens in the left side of the odd numbered pages. I DO NOT want this to happen. Ideally, the edit would ONLY happen in the box of which I edited. I uploaded a picture to provide more details and what I'm looking at.

Your picture shows right and left margins synchronizing automatically for two-sided printing.

Since your intention is for pages to be printed on both sides and then spiral bound wouldn't you want the page margins to be "mirrored" exactly like this?

After all it is the same spiral which passes through both sides of a single page, requiring the same extra space on each side of that page.

If the "Two sided" checkbox is not selected, only one set of margins can be modified, but will apply to all pages.

This wouldn't affect anything if I still wanted the score to be double sided, correct?

If you are printing double sided then the "Two sided" checkbox should be selected, especially if you want the pages bound. Bound pages require unequal left/right margins to allow extra space for the binding side of the pages.

I could still print it double sided?

Sure, you can print double sided with unequal left/right margins and not get the pages bound, but why? The music would not be centered on the pages.

On the other hand...
If you want the pages not to be bound, and printed double sided, you should keep the left/right margins equal. This way the music is centered on each side of every page.
For instance, if you have several unbound pages on a music stand and flip them individually, you really don't need different left/right margins. You would want the music centered on each side as you flip pages.

Also, with the "Two sided" checkbox unchecked you can still print double sided - and in this case all pages and all sides will have identical margins. Of course, binding such pages would not be recommended.
