prema volta et secondo volta (first & second endings)

• Oct 23, 2023 - 22:26

I'm trying to enter a piece with a simple first and second ending. The idea is to play the piece to th e first repeat sign then repeat the piece skipping the first ending and the second time, play the second ending.
The lines pallett contains a prima vola, seconda vola, and a seconda volta, open. As it happens, both endings a re slight;y more than one line long. With no prima volta, open and no way to indicate the end of either volta on the second line, I can't find a way to play both endings back properly.
Please help.
Thanks,
Bill

First, for anyone else reading, this is in version 3.6.2 and may be different in newer versions depending upon when this post is read.

A] You have entered the voltas wrongly.
In the Volta section of the Handbook there is a link to changing the selection:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/4/adjusting-elements-directly#change-…

Click on Volta 1 and press [Ctrl] R to reset it's dimensions and you will see it jump back to one bar. It looks like you then stretched the line of the volta to cover several bars but this only changes the appearance of the volta and not the property it contains that says which bars are included in it. Either select ALL the bars you want and then click on the Volta 1 in the palette or put it on the first bar of you selection and use [Shift] [RightArrow] to extend the selection to include other bars.

For Volta 2, it's similar, but you seem to have added another line to make it look longer.

Thanks underquark. I used both techniques and they both produce a score that looks great but I can't get the playback to work correctly. The first time through the first ending is played. But when it reaches the end repeat sign in measure 60 it simply stops if I have play repeats enabled. I was expecting it to return to and play a second time from the begin repeat sign at measure 5. If play repeats is disabled it plays the first ending followed immediaely by the second ending.

What did I do wrong this time?

note: This is probably a duplication. (I'm not sure how to respond.)

The last measure in volta 1 has a play count of 1. It should be 2. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/voltas#Play_count

To change the play count right click in that measure and open measure properties from the pop up menu.

If you start by entering the repeats and voltas correctly, the play count is set to 2 automatically. It should only need to be changed if you want a section to be repeated more than once.

Thanks SteveBlower. I was aware of the play count. I was able to find out how to change it by searching the online handbook but I failed to find the "+1" part. I had deleted both volta, selected the measures involved and clicked the appropriate pallett icon. I checked, and when I saw a play count of 2, I changed it to 1! It seems a bit un-intuative: Play Count = 2 => play ending once; Play Count = 1 => don't play it at all. But don't misunderstand me. I think MuseScore is a phenomenal piece of software! And I'm sure not going to dig through thosands of lines of open source files to try to change this sort of thing.

Thanks again,
Bill Evans
