Entering odd combinations of dotted notes

• Oct 29, 2023 - 04:00

I'm trying to enter the measure shown below.

I can enter the dotted half C, the 1/8 rest, and the eighth notes G and E. Soon as I try to enter that dotted quarter E, instead of lining it up under the C, it shoves the C over, and changes it to an eighth note followed by a quarter note.

How do I tell MuseScore that the C and the E, tho they're different durations, belong on the same beat? This is driving me bonkers.

Answer:
If you have multiple musical lines that have different rhythm, that is, notes of different durations playing at the same time, use voices.
See:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/4/working-multiple-voices#Enter_notes…

So, enter the dotted half C, the 1/8 rest, and the eighth notes G and E in voice 1. Then return to the beginning of the measure and enter the other notes in voice 2.
