cannot delete rests

• Oct 31, 2023 - 22:48

I cannot delete rests that were added to my score. They are part of Voice 1, but so are other notes. See my example. The first "A" is voice part 1, but so is the rest, and I cannot understand why the rest is there. How can I delete them?

You can't delete rests in voice 1. It is difficult to see what is going on from that picture. It is better to attach the score - the .mscz file. However, I guess you have made the common mistake of not starting with voice 1 in each stave. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/4/working-multiple-voices for information on when and how to use multiple voices.

If that doesn't help, come back and attach your score for more specific help.

Thank you for trying to help; I am grateful. Indeed, I wrote in the bass part with Voice 1, then I selected the notes I wanted to be in Voice 3 and clicked voice 3, and it created rests. What you linked says to live with it, basically: "simply use voice 1 instead of voice 2." This workaround looks fine because the stems are correct, but this is just dumb by the software to change things automatically.

In your example you do not need voice 3, you can accomplish what you need with just voice 1 and 2 on each staff. Instead of deleting, you should be able to select any rests that voice 2 creates and click "v" to make them invisible. They will still show gray on screen but not on printed output. Some rests may still be needed for clarity for the person playing.
