Musescore .md extension causes problems with Markdown files? (MacOS)

• Jan 15, 2024 - 09:24

Hi everyone,

I've noticed an issue with the filetype Musescore files use to save – usually, I have my scores saved as [score name].md (presumably for Musescore Document?), which normally has not been a problem. Recently, I downloaded the notetaking software Obsidian, which uses Markdown file format, which also saves onto my computer as .md. When I go to look at my Obsidian notes in my Mac Finder page, the Markdown notes show up as MuseScore scores, so when I try to open them in word-processing software the filetype won't let me. I had to actually delete Musescore to let my Mac open the files correctly.

Has anyone else had this problem? Does this also happen if you download Musescore onto a device which already has a markdown notetaking software? Would it be worth changing the filetype Musescore files save as? Would welcome any and all comments to this.

I've had this same issue. I use Obsidian and downloaded MuseScore to try out. It seems someone else had this same issue back in 2020, but it seems like this issue has not been fixed. https://musescore.org/en/node/304962

I had to uninstall MuseScore to get the file types to be restored to normal .md (markdown) files. I came across your comment researching this issue to see if it was still happening for some people. I wish there was a different file type that MuseScore used.

I have just downloaded the ABC import utility version 4.0.0. The readme.md file opens as a blank page. Is there some MuseScore option I have to check in order to read this file? I can't run the plugin until I have read the file. Thanks.

No need to install anything, just open that file with a regular text editor
You could also unassign the .md extension fro MuseScire, if you're reasonably sure to not want to import MuseData files (which seems a pretty save bet, considering how old and rare that format is)
