Warning When Exporting or Printing Parts in Concert Pitch

• Jan 26, 2024 - 01:10

I think it would be helpful for Musescore to have a warning prompt when you try to export or print parts and one or more of the parts are in concert pitch. I often use the concert pitch tool either on the score tab or on individual parts while I'm editing score. However, I sometimes forget to uncheck the concert pitch and exported parts to PDF not realizing they were all in concert pitch. To prevent this from happening, I propose adding a warning message that's prompted when you try to either print or export parts that are in concert pitch. This warning would prevent this from happening by accident. I'm thinking it would look something like this:

One or more of the parts you are printing/exporting is in concert pitch. Are you sure you want to print/export? (Y/N)

Yes, I'm having the same issue! But I'm not sure if there should be a warning but rather be a checkbox on the export dialog with the option to export everything in non-concert pitch. Currently, the extra work to go through all of your parts and disable concert pitch does not feel like 2025 at all. I think this is unnecessary work that should be handled by the machine. And I can't believe that so little is found on this topic in the forum. Are we two the only ones to have this issue? Or am I missing something?

And to not come across as a complainer: I love Musescore! And I'm happy that it's here for free and I'd even pay for it as long it would be less money than for Sibelius for example… 8-)

I'd even go as far as suggesting, that once you create all of your parts, they should not be in concert pitch by default. Of course you should still be able to toggle this individually but the default state would be "off". Why?
I assume a typical workflow is: you write an arrangement in score view and view it to your liking in concert pitch or transposed pitch. Once you create your parts for the first time, you likely do this to format your individual parts. But formatting the parts should already happen in non-concert pitch, as this has significant impact on your layout. So a default setting of non-concert pitch seems quite helpful and reasonable to me. And I can't think of any use case where one uses the parts in concert pitch an even exports them in that mode. This would seem like a quite rare case to me. But maybe I'm wrong here.

I see what you're getting at and I do agree that it would rarely be someone's intention to deliberately export parts in concert pitch. That being said, I'm not sure it would be a good idea to just automatically change it. Personally I find it annoying when software makes assumptions about what you're trying to do and having to jump through hoops when you are trying to do something different. That's why my suggestion was a warning message that gives you the option to either change the parts or export them as is. Here's an example of what I envisioned (please excuse the crude graphic).
