Problems with Macos Ventura

• Mar 8, 2024 - 11:21

I have just about given up on worrying about how MuseScore 4 works in MacOS. I know that it's supposed to work with Palettes and other panels, but basically they all seem to fight with the way the OS wants to control the screen.

For example, if I want to put in any dynamic marking I should be able to open a palette and select Dynamics, and then put in the dynamic marking. For quite a while this has not worked, so instead I open the Master palette and drag items from there - that works.

Another conflict seems to arise if external instruments are used in the Mixer. For example if an external library - or a library manager such as Plogue is loaded, then first a panel for that is loaded, but then if any attempt is made to use that panel it blanks out, so in the case of the Plogue panel - which requires a .sfz file to be moved over the panel to load it, it's not actually possible as one has to try to find the .sfz file first.

I realise that most of the work and debugging is not done in MacOS - but this has definitely got a lot worse in the last six months or so.

Some who have posted in response to my comments here and elsewhere have denied that this kind of thing happens, but I'm afraid it's all too real. I understand that things like this are not supposed to happen - but in fact they actually do.

In the case of the plugins for instruments I know that some of them generally do work in other software - such as DAWs as if I enounter problems like this I can fire up Logic and test them there. Sometimes I can get a fix, and then see how to get these working in MU4 - but sometimes it's just very painful trying to work with MU4 because of these interface issues.

Another problematic library manager system is Kontakt - which may be awkward even in a DAW - but it is more tricky within MU4. I know it works sometimes, so it's not completely incompatible.

Compatibility of MU4 with Apple Macos does seem to be getting a lot worse - which is very unfortunate.

I get the master pallete up, and then I think I just double click.

I'd have to check. Trying to get anything done on Macos is beginning to be a nightmare with MU4.

.... and NO - I'm not going to switch to Windows.

Just checked for dynamics. Get the master pallette up. Then select note. Then double click on dynamic in master pallete. It works.

In Ventura this is now much easier than trying to work with other pallettes, as they are likely to disappear or pop up in other locations.
