Lost projects

• Jun 1, 2024 - 23:11

I was working on 2 projects when my laptop restarted to do an update unprompted. One of these, an arrangement of the jazz standard moondance is something i've put a ton of time into, and really really would like to get back.

I checked the backup files, and for whatever reason, no backup was made of either file. Is there somewhere else I can check?

Check hidden .mscbackup directory where you saved your project before.
You may find your file with name .your_filename.mscz~
Copy that file to another location, remove ~ sign from filename and try to open it

When you create a project, Musescore creates a new_project.mscz file inside the C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\MuseScore\MuseScore4 directory.
But you should never rely on it. This file is not only rewritten every time, but also, according to my observations, it does not save progress.

If you are on Windows, I would also find out why your computer restarted. Check in Settings>Updates>Advanced to see if download updates and restart is checked. There might also be a particular software that is doing that. You can Look in Event Viewer to find out.

About that. MuseScore tends to have problems when you close the lid or otherwise put the computer to sleep. Safe practice if you are not going to use the program for awhile is to save and close Musescore. Many programs don't have this problem, but MuseScore does.
