Adding velocity changes to MS4

• Jul 29, 2024 - 15:33

Will musescore 4 ever add the ability to manually change the velocity (volume) of each note? Especially as a piano composer, I find this feature extremely useful, and it's the sole reason that I still do the majority of my composing in MS3 rather than in MS4, as MS3 actually has this feature.

The feature currently exists in MS4, although it doesn't work at all. I think the same goes for the tuning cents feature, it's there but doesn't work at all.

Many of us have been distressed about the state of note velocity in MuseScore 4.

First, to be clear, we can manually change velocity in MuseScore 4 but the results do not affect Muse Sounds, MuseScore's flagship sound source. Presently velocities only impact the playback of MSBasic sounds and the VSTs and soundfonts.

Worse, editing velocities is much more difficult now because we can't have the velocity field always visible in the Properties panel. We must toggle open the Playback area every time we want to edit a velocity UNLESS that last object selected was a note—they it stays opens. But this is a real pain if you want to edit a velocity then a slur, and a velocity and then the position of a non note object ...

EVEN worse, the old system (Offset and User velocities) is not compatible with some aspects of the new design. So as I understand it v4.4 will simply discard ALL of a scorist's painstakingly entered velocities.

All notes come into 4.4 at velocity 64. In MS3 Offset existed purely to allow velocities to comport with dynamics. So now we're back to just velocities, but reset to 64.
