Is there a way to freely and quickly change between guitar tab and standard notation without having to link/hide staves? I have situations where I might want a few measures on a staff to do rhythmic notation, and then other measures in tab. Linking and hiding empty measures messes up my workflow when it comes to formatting.

There is no way to switch between a regular staff and a tag staff in the same system, but if the switch can happen at a system break ("line break") you can add both a regular staff and and a tab staff (which are not linked) and then put the rhythmic notation in the regular staff and the tab stuff in the tab stuff. Then you add a system break where you need to switch from one to the other, and check the "hide empty staves".
Surprisingly neither a staff type change nor an instrument change (to a Tablature instrument) does the trick
