Most Basic Guitar Tabbing Method

Hi, just downloaded MS a couple of days ago and am looking for some really basic tabbing software, so far from browsing around it still seems too complicated. I just want to be able to put down the fingerings before I forget them for short licks or solo sections. I’m too rusty at composition to put in the note values right out of the gate, I’d rather just figure it out later. I basically want my workflow to look a blank six lined sheet so I can:
1)type out the fingerings I need, and then
2) draw the ends of the measures , then
3) figure out the note values within the confines of the measure.

When I tried to do this with the basics templates I basically forgot the idea because it was so cumbersome to enter in the tab while having to select the note value.

What template can I use to accomplish this? Can MS even do this?

I've used workflow similar to yours, but on a 5-lines staff. On musescore 3 with parkingb's "Duration Editor" plugin installed https://musescore.org/en/project/duration-editor (plugin doesn't support musescore 4 yet) . Not sure if that plugin works on guitar tab or not.
I think switching template may not help, templates are related to instruments setup.

I can confirm that parkingb's duration editor does indeed work with TAB.

You could initially set up a long time signature to give you more freedom and fewer barlines, such as a single bar per screen line of TAB. Also, choose the TAB option with rests NOT shown. When you finally sort out your durations then you can drop a more suitable time signature on top of the dummy long one to replace it and automatically generate the required barlines.
