Viola Da Gamba Tab broken on the newest version of Musescore (4.4)

• Aug 31, 2024 - 06:34

In the newest version of Musescore (4.4) , the viola da gamba tab option has been replaced with Bass Viol. That's fine, however, the tab feature appears to be broken. You are unable to cut and paste notes correctly. This is one of the features that drew me to musescore and I would love to see it fixed. I attached a pdf sample of what it looks like when I try to use the Bass Viol Tab staff on Muse Score 4.4. I did not have this issue with previous versions. I will stick with 4.3 until this is fixed.

Thanks for the link. I read through it, but it doesn't seem to address the issue. I just downloaded version 4.4.2, and the problem persists. When using a Bass Viol Tab staff, you can't copy and paste notes into it. In the past, I would use the Guitar Tab feature and manually change all the string data to make it work. It was a hassle, but at least it worked.

With this issue, it seems like the tab staff doesn't recognize itself as a tab staff. Whenever I cut and paste notation into the tab staff, I get the same result, regardless of the score or font used. In the example provided, you can see that I inserted two tab staves. The one labeled 'Viol' was adapted from a classical guitar tab staff by changing the string tuning. However, the Bass Viol staff remains the same no matter what I paste into it.

Additionally, you cannot change the fret numbers on the Bass Viol Tab. Since I can still make the guitar tab staff work, I'll probably revert to that method, but it's time-consuming and frustrating. I hope this issue gets fixed soon. Thank you.

Wow, you're right, the Bass Viola Instruments (Tablature), in G and D, are completely broken. Impossible to enter frets either with keyboard keys or mouse. What's more, you can clearly see (image below) that it's not even possible to change staff type, the drop-down list doesn't even exist, it's empty.

Please file a bug report on Github as soon as possible, here: https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/issues
For my part, I'll try to determine which version this happened with.

Hmm, strange... Until version 4.3.2 , in the Instruments list, there was a Viola da Gamba and Viola da Gamba (Tablature) instrument, which worked - image below.

And to confirm what you said in your initial message, the viola da gamba has been replaced (?) with the Bass Viol.
Since 4.4, on that list, we no longer see Viola da Gamba, and the "new" (?) Bass Viol (Tablature) don't work at all.
What has happened? This deserves further investigation.

In the meantime, the workaround is to select the Bass Viol instrument, and therefore not Bass Viol (Tablature).
Then, by clicking on the cogwheel opposite the staff name, you now have the option of changing the staff type, i.e. to a Tablature of your choice, in the drop-down list.
