Last page layout

• Oct 17, 2014 - 14:04

Running v 1.3 on Dell desktop. Another newbie question, can't find the answer. Have successfully written several scores, but an ongoing issue with my last page layout is that, if I have the style>page settings arranged to give me four 2-staff systems, with maximum system distances etc. to fill the page, when the last page has only two or three systems, the system distance is only about half of the rest of the score, crowding the systems together. If I expand the measure lengths to get four systems on the last page, then it displays like the other pages. What am I doing wrong? Is it possible to make the last page format the same as the other pages when it's not full? Any help much appreciated!

From the handbook:
http://musescore.org/en/handbook/layout-and-formatting#Style---Edit-Gen…
'Page fill threshold - If the page is fuller than this, system space is ignored, and everything is stretched to fill the page.'

So...
With four 2-staff systems per page, the page is very likely over the default page fill threshold of 70%, so MuseScore will ignore your system distances and fill the page.
With two or three 2-staff sytems on the last page, the page is very likely under the default page fill threshold of 70%, so MuseScore will honor the 'System distance' setting and *not* fill the page. In this case, you will have to increase the 'System distance' to get the last page to look like the other pages.

Alternatively, you can set the 'Page fill threshold' to 100% and the 'System distance' number (sp) will be applied to *all* pages equally.

N.B. - sp = a basic unit of measurement used throughout MuseScore. One sp (spatium) is equal to the distance between two adjacent leger lines.

Regards, and welcome aboard...

With the background info provided in the other responses, hoepfully you can see what is happening: all pages but the last are actually not using your system distance settings directly, but instead the page fill is kicking in. Only on the last page are you seeing your unadulterated system distance settings.

There are a numebr of ways around this, but I find the simplest is this: add a staff spacer below the final system, drag it to the bottom of the page (which causes the fill to kick in), then adjust untilt he system distance looks pleasing, I usually go for a slightly looser look on the last page if there are fewer systems than the other pages - that's how much published music works too.

My grateful thanks to all who responded. I won't be able to get back to it for a day or so, but when I do, looks like my bacon is saved! Next stop, Broadway!
