I'm using MuseScore 4.4.3 (on MacOS) and I can undock the Play Panel by the six-dot handle.
To be clear, the Play Panel's tempo slider offers a temporary override of tempos set in the score. This override disappears when you close the score.
If you want a permanent tempo change you'll need to use Tempo marks, as described here for MuseScore 4:

Thanks for your prompt reply, but as you can read I can
t get the Play Panel and slider to appear. 4.4.3 on Win 10 .As i
ve already said click and drag on the six dot handle does not work .Clicking on view and tempo adjust gives me a fixed setting which appears to be fixed.I`ll try it on another computer? In reply to Thanks for your prompt reply… by matthewsjohnw
If by fixed, you mean you see something like "1/4 note = 80", that's where you start. View>Text palette. Select the measure where you want the tempo to be. The first measure, for example. In the text palette, select the 1/4 note + 80. It will appear over the chosen measure. Double click the "80" and enter the tempo you want.
Don't worry about the slider method.

You likely meant the Tempo palette, yes?

Yes, of course, Tempo Palette.

Many thanks, yes that works ok on my desk top or at least it works by clicking on "tempo" and then selecting first bar, click on crotchet = 80 in tempo menu and then it appear appears above first bar, I can then double click it and edit it to any tempo.
However, it would be useful to have the full tempo palette avaiable to quickly alter the tempo with the slider to check for any duff notes that I
ve entered by listening to the score at various tempos.
ve managed to get the palette to undock and expand to show the slider but it takes several attempts to grab the handle and move it quickly to the right ,any other direction or moving the pointer slowly will not work,.Unfortunately, once iWith MS 4.3.3 on my HP win 11 desk top I
ve got the full palettee on screen I can
t get rid of it. It takes numerous tries to re grab the handle and when it does it fails to re-dock to home.Closing the score or selecting another score doesnt work . On rebooting the app and selecting a new score the whole palette is still there. I
ve got to keep on trying to grab the handle till it finally decides to lock on and then position very carefully over the shaded out home docking area. Its areal pain.
t get this to work at all on my Medion Win10 tablet.I can

I agree the slider is a big hassle to work with. BTW, did you know that if you want to playback just the (for example) woodwind section, you can select the first measure of the top instrument, then SHIFT+select the bottom instrument and everything selected will playback.

When having trouble docking, use menu item: View > Restore the default layout.

It sounds like you may be misunderstanding something. If I'm mistaken, my apologies in advance.
The place you got that "crochet = 80" tempo marking is the "tempo palette". This is used for permanent tempo setting.
The six dots button that you are/were having trouble with is the Playback Panel and the tempo slider on it is used to set a temporary tempo.
I'm'a bet that you are having problems with a touch pad or touch screen. I tried it with the touchpad on my laptop (which I generally never use) and I find that I can't pull the Playback Panel down either. If you have the possibility, try attaching a mouse?
[A few minutes later] Upon further experimentation, I found that I get very consistent results if I double-tap on the six-dots button and hold on that second tap. Then it "picks up" the button and I can move the Playback Panel to undock, to move, and to redock.
