Brace spanning any amount of staves depending on the system

• Apr 22, 2025 - 22:18

So I have this piece for solo piano where there is one measure without the third staff, then the next with the third staff at the bottom, but I hid the third staff in the first measure mentioned, which makes the brace span the three staves despite only showing two. If I try and change the span of the brace, it ends up not spanning all three in other systems. Is it possible to make it span just two staves for one system, and then go back to three afterwards? Or better yet just make it span however many staves there are on the instrument?

What your image shows is standard behaviour for a cutaway staff, where the brace will span all the staves which contain notes anywhere in that system:

Yes. I took one movement of a piano suite and changed alternate systems to have three staves instead of two. The placing of the brace adapts correctly, and it's only the fact that the third staff is marked as "Cutaway" in staff properties which causes the missing measure at the start of the system. If you disable the Cutaway property, the staff extends leftwards to the brace with an empty measure:

See measure 43 in the attached score.
