Musescore wont let me add notes or key signatures and won't let me make instruments invisible

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program and it still persists. I have to open musescore with this command from the terminal
QT_QUICK_BACKEND=software /Applications/MuseScore\ 4.app/Contents/MacOS/mscore

otherwise it crashes.
when i try to add notes on the first instrument, it won't show me where the cursor is. I have an easier time typing in the letters. switching input modes does not help. I am unable to add anything to the rest of the instruments. I cant change the key and time signatures. I havent checked every other item in the palletes, but i presume theres more problems. Please advise
