Part names once changed are not saved

• May 25, 2025 - 21:35

MuseScore version : 4.5.2.251141402
Severity: S4 (not a big problem, most application features still work, just not this relatively small part)
Type: Functional

For some reason there is a disconnect between the "true part name" (let me call it) as seen on the score itself and the "part ID" (let me call it) that appears in the Parts dialogue box. I attach a screenshot of the Parts dialogue because that's where I find the problem.

The true part name works very well, it shows on the score, it shows in the Layout menu on the left hand side of the screen, and when the true part name (and short name) are changed they stay changed, and you can save them, and everything is great.

The "part ID" LOOKS as if it is the same thing as the true part name, but it is not, it is independent, and (I am guessing) relates to how the part/instrument was originally selected for inclusion in the score. When I open a part, it is this "part ID" that appears as the TAB label in the UI and at the top left corner of the part. As I say, it is for some reason independent of the true part name.

If I have RENAMED my part ID, which was
Violins (section) (3)
to
II Violins 1
to match what the true part name is, then I can have printed parts consistent with the score. So, I would do that, except in my version of MuseScore, when I rename the part ID, it only lasts for as long as the score is open. Saving it SHOULD save these settings (I would expect) but it does not work.

To reproduce: Open the score, change the part ID name in the part dialogue box, and return to the score. Save the score. Close the score. Reopen the score - the part ID name is unchanged.

WORK-AROUND

In order to force it to save, you can OPEN the part from the part dialogue, and as soon as you do this, it notices the changed part ID, as shown by the asterisk against the score tab. At this point, a save WILL be effective and save the score with the new part ID :-)
