repeat trouble / question

• Jun 8, 2025 - 11:00

hi, in the small attached score my intention with the repeat and voltas is for the measures to be played in the sequence:
- 1-10
- 3-8
- 11-12

What happens instead is
- 1-10
- 3-8
- 9
- 11-12

Is there a simple explanation for this? How do I get the desired result? Any idea what I did wrong?

Sincerely,

Tim

Hang on to the concept that voltas are alternative endings for a repeated section.

So this is how it should work:
- 1-10 : the 1st volta must contain mm. 8, 9, 10
- 3-8: the 2nd volta must contain only m.8 (you have write out m.8 a second time in this volta)
- 11-12: these two measures fall outside the repeat structure

Hi, Daniel,
thanks for the quick reply, explanation, and repaired score!
Much appreciated.
Cheers,
Tim
p.s. I must say this is counter-intuitive to me, since it feels as though I've read plenty of music where (in the example of my score and your repair) measure 8 doesn't get written down twice.

(E.g. an A1, A2 form where the first 6 bars are common to A1 and A2, but only bars 7 and 8 are in volta 1 and bars 9 and 10 end up in volta 2. So each of A1 and A2 is 8 bars long, but we only need to write down 10 because the first 6 are in common.)

So I suspect I am still missing something in my understanding.

Anyway, thanks again!

You should not drag the volta line over two measures. It only works for measure 10!

You should select the two measures 9 and 10 and then apply the volta 1.

Volta 2 is correct so far, but you don't have to go over both measures, you can use just one and you don't have to use an end hook. But you can ...
