Trying to write swing for drums...

I'm trying to write in a shuffle.... Am I forced to write in 12/8 instead of 4/4?
While the hi-hat is shuffle, the bass drum is still in 4/4, though with crossbeats.
I've tried to write in two different voices, but the bass drum seems to always alter the hi-hats....
