Check for Update
'Check for Update' is currently placed under the 'Help' menu - on Mac OS anyway. On this platform, the feature is mapped under the name of some applications (e.g. iTunes, VLC).
I don't know if it is planned to make MuseScore available from the Mac App Store, but if the update feature was only available via this, then it could pose a problem for users who'll download the application directly from the website (or maybe even compiling the source code).
Some software (e.g. FireFox) automatically updates via 'About', but I'm not keen on this practice, as the user may only wish to check version details.
Any opinions?
I also wonder about other platforms, but others will be better placed to answer.
Comments
Just on the subject of this feature:
What would 'Check for Update' do?
1. Update within the application.
2. Download a file to be installed manually.
3. Direct you to the website.
I don't know if there's other ways?
Some software provide updates in the form of patches - would MuseScore be capable of doing this? It might be useful for those who have limited internet access, for example.
If major (trunk?) and minor (branch?) updates are available, should we provide options to the user?
I'm wondering whether conflicts would occur if the user compiled the source code and used the feature. Maybe the user should just simply avoid it?
I think I was more-or-less told a few years ago that remapping the feature to the other menu would be difficult.
Perhaps circumstances are different now?
