Toggle Rhythmic Slash Notation

• Nov 29, 2014 - 19:50

Hi, folks. Some questions about the new implementation of the rhythmic slash notation function...I am running nightly be027cd on Mac OS 10.10.

(1) Under 1.3, you could take a selected number of bars and apply rhythmic cues from the contents of voice 3, leaving the contents of voice 1 unperturbed (except for the direction of stems). Now, under the new functionality, if I apply the "toggle rhythmic slash notation" function to a range of measures, it converts the contents of both voices (voice 1 becomes full-size rhythmic notation, voice 3 becomes small rhythm cues). Perhaps this suggests a specific workflow, but in some ways, this seems less efficient for lead sheet generation...? (Or is it possible to select everything within a selected group of measures in a specific voice so as to limit the action of the function?)

(2) Should not the "toggle rhythmic slash notation", when acting on voice 3, also set rests to "small"? It appears to leave them full size.

(3) It appears that 2.0 now displaces rests in voice 1 when you start to enter content in voice 3. I can see how this would be desirable when those two voices are used conventionally, but when the notes in voice 3 are moved into a rhythmic cue position, would it not make sense to restore the positioning of those rests in staff 1 to their default vertical position?

Looking forward to playing with this some more... :-)

1. I didn't make the new toggle rhythmic notation feature only work on voice 3 because a) it is also very useful for "regular" rhythmic notation (as opposed to "accent" notation) to use voice 1, and b) there is now a built-in facility to filter selections to include just a given voice. Just uncheck voice 1 in the Selection Filter (F6, or see Edit menu).

2. Yes, I should probably make it so rests get set small too. I had deliberately not messed with vertical position because there is a small can of worms there since I don't necessarily know the default position of the rest, but setting small should be safe. I don't suppose you'd want to file that as a bug to the issue tracker?

BTW, workaround for now is to right one rest (with the selection still active), Select / All similar elements in range selection, then use Inspector to make them small and if desired raise them 1sp.

3. The facility to autoamtically displace rests has been in place for a couple of years now, the slash notation facility all of a week or two :-). So unfortunately, I didn't get to rewrite how the basic rest positioning code is handled. I suppose at some point point we should look at this, but I am thinking it's not likely for 2.0. Meanwhile, you can just reset those rest positions manually.
