Crashed when creating parts

• Jan 9, 2015 - 15:39

Hi,

I've just finished an arrangement and was creating parts when MuseScore crashed, and now the file I was working on won't reopen - everytime I try it crashes MuseScore again. I've been using MuseScore for years and it's never done this before.

For your info - I'm using version 1.2, and using a Mac OS 10.10.1.

I'm afraid I can't reproduce the error as I can't reopen the file, but I was wondering whether there is a way that someone else can try to open my file and re-send it to me? I'd really rather not lose all my hours of work!

Or if I download a new version (it's been a while since I updated my software) do you think this may allow me to then open my file?

Many thanks

Mel

MuseScore 1.3 may cause more/different problems with Mac OS 10.10
You could try though. You could also try MuseScore 2.0 Beta 2.

But I guess your file has become corrupt and won't load with any version.
Can you you attach it here?

You could look for the backup file and see whether that still opens, see http://musescore.org/en/node/20367

I took a look at that page about recovering backup copies, and I'm puzzled about something. I'm running on Windows 7, and the page says that backup copies should be stored in a session directory in the following places:

MuseScore 1.x: C:\Users\\AppData\Local\MusE\MuseScore\
MuseScore 2.x: C:\Users\\AppData\Local\MuseScore\MuseScore2\

It's not clear to me from the instructions whether these are themselves the session directories, or whether they are supposed to contain a subdirectory called "session". In any event, there are no backup copies in either place, even though I've been using 1.3 heavily for the last week and I have it set to auto-save every 2 minutes. There is a small XML file called "session" in both directories.

What's going on here?

You should see alphanumerically named files ending with '.mscz' (without the quotation marks). These are the session backup files. They do not have the same names as you gave them when you created and saved them (to the regular score folder). For example, I have one named 'scUL5888.mscz'.
You have to open these one by one to find if the one you want is there.

@ghicks
Ha! I now notice that you are not the original poster. (His score crashed.)
Welcome aboard... and even though you haven't had a crash (yet), it's good to know about these file locations. Especially since the one we are referring to is normally hidden (in Windows) which makes it difficult for some to find when they really need it.

Regards.
