• Jan 25, 2015 - 01:33

1. Open attached score (produced in 1.3).

Result: The lyrics of each entry don't align vertically.

Discussion: Whilst the behaviour in the image seems wrong anyway, it raises a wider question: Should the lyric align to the left-most note of all voices, or the voice it was input? Maybe something else?

A couple of things -

If you change the B in voice 2 to a G - thus forcing the whole note in voice 1 further to the right - you'll see that the syllables remain "more or less" aligned in exactly the same way they are now. That is, even though the voice 1 whole notes will move way over the the right, their lyrics stye where they were.

It seems the source of the misalignment isn't the multiple voices per se - change the whole notes to half notes and the lyrics align perfectly. The difference is presumably due to the difference in head sizes between half and whole notes. The centering code works fine - remove the melisma lines and all is well too - but I guess the left align code is off a little.

See #45586: Left-aligned lyrics on whole note align with whole note, not other lyrics. It's the same discrepancy that happens even if the whole note is not offset - if it is directly above (or below) a quarter or half notes. The noteheads are centered so left-aligning to the noteheads thenmselves results in the difference we see here. I have proposed fixing it by aligning everything to the "nominal" note start, even if there is a wider-than-average notehead that extends out a little to the left.
