Too many ties when loading midi
Is there some setting I can change so it doesn't display all these ties (instead of longer sustaining notes)?

MIDI files are intended for playback so creating notation from them is difficult. Your screenshot doesn't show the full context of those tied notes and you do not include a copy of the MIDI file. But my guess is there is a bunch of notes changing at the same time as the held notes. The only way to do within a single voices and staff is with ties. MuseScore does not yet try to guess at a good choice of voices for MIDI import.

Sorry for the ambiguity, but you assumed correct. That was exactly what i thought was why.
