Retaining Playback Volume On Exit

Is this possible? I've been working on a score for most of the day and every time I want to play it back to see how it's going I have to adjust the volume in the Play panel, the Mixer or the Synthesizer.

The manual seems to suggest that changes made via the Mixer are permanent but that's not happening for me. Each time I close/reopen the score I have to set the volume again.

I believe that permanent changes are those made by Synthesizer.
Move the cursor slightly and see the options: Set as Default / Save to Score
