Is there a way to hear trills on playback?

• Apr 8, 2015 - 01:05

Whenever I put a trill on an instrument like a violin or piano or something, it doesn't play it. Is there a certain way to make it work or does it just not do it?
Thanks

This is often requested, but currently MuseScore does not play back trills. A workaround is to put in the series of individual notes that would make up the trill in Voice 2, make them invisible, and set the visible note in Voice 1 to be silent.

I downloaded the example from this link and it works fine, but when I insert a trill into my score by selecting a note and clicking the trill icon from the Articulations and Ornaments palette it doesn't play - is there something else I need to do? (MuseScore 2.1.0).

In order to do more than guess at what is gong on we would need you to attach the score you are having problems.

That said, my guess is the note you are tryign to trill is too short for the automatic playback facility to consider worth trilling - there is a lower limit on the note duration I believe. So it can't for example trill a 16th note at 200 BPM or whatever.

What version of Musescore do you have (mine is 2.0.3 on a Mac)? Mine does play back trills. There are caveats though. It seems if the note is too short (measured in seconds, not in beats) the trills aren't played. Also the trills are too slow at a slow tempo and too fast at a fast tempo. But they do play (I just tried with clarinet and it worked as well as with violin).

Yes I think it is the speed. The part I was using trills on was at 80 BPM, so the trill (on a written low G for Bb clarinet) sounded weird. I feel like there is to much space in between the notes. They should be a little bit more slurred. I am transcribing Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin, which starts with a trill on low G (as mentioned earlier). Go to https://musescore.com/tangentrockband/trill-trial if you want to see what I mean. If you want to hear how it should sound, it will be at the very beginning of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFHdRkeEnpM (This trill is slower at the beginning, but I don't that at the moment). Also, the speeds seem to change proportionally (also at first link). For example, that same trill at 120 BPM is WAY too fast. It is pretty much impossible to play, and it doesn't really even sound like a trill.

Another problem: I think Musescore need flat/natural/sharp trills. I have looked at quite a few discussions on that, and now I know how to make it look correct in a few different ways. However, during playback, it will still be played normally. I (sadly) only know of two examples where this is used. They are Rhapsody in Blue (mentioned above), and Mozart's 35th symphony at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3rI-nFMFZE. The first example uses flat trills (the flats are from flat notes earlier in the meausure), and the second one has a natural trill that was previously sharp from the key signature.

For now, I don't think there are any other things I have to say on this topic of trills, but if I have anything else in the future about trills or anything else, I will be sure to notify you or someone else.

P.S. I believe I saw you in another discussion somewhere and you said you were a developer of Musescore (or something like that). Please excuse me if I am confusing you with someone else, but is that the case? If so, it would be super-cool if you could fix something or help design a new update for Musescore that will make it bypass Finale and/or Sibelius (unless it already has, I'm not quite sure). Hmmm, that seems like a little too much now... Well, thanks anyway!

Trills on wind instruments should indeed be skewed, but MuseScore currently does not support playback of slurs. It's something we'd all like to see, but unfortunately the limitations of MIDI make this easier said than done. Not impossible, just not simple. Hopefully some day.

Honoring accidentals on trills should be easier and will hopefully happen as well. Do keep in mind though that the primary purpose of MuseScore is notation, not playback, so that is where the bulk of development effort goes.

Playback of accidentals on trills works as far as I remember. The trill Ivory's the key signature and recognizes accidentals earlier in the measure especially if they disagree with the key signature. If you need the trill to be between A and Bb for example, in the key of C, then insert a Bb earlier in the measure on another voice and make it visible=false and play=false.

There is however now notational way to indicate flat, sharp, or natural on a trill sign graphically.

good to know, I didn't know it was possible to add accidentals to line tries. In that case it would be possible to make them play back. It wouldn't be very difficult.
