New to music in general, could use a hand with this.

Hello everybody, as the subject says, I'm quite new to music in general and I"m trying to copy this monster of a piece http://mikimoko.com/sites/default/files/pdfs/Dearly%20beloved~.pdf into MuseScore, but I'm having trouble.

There's a lot of things I would ask, but first I'll ask why can't I get the right number of notes into even the first measure? And why does the program insist on adding rests when I don't want them?

The attached picture shows what I mean. All of the rests were added automatically and I don't want them there, can't seem to get rid of them.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I would recommend reading through note entry in the handbook and perhaps watching the video at the bottom of that page to get a good understanding of note entry. MuseScore is targeted towards users with a basic understanding of music notation so it may take a while to get used to although several people on this forum have mentioned that MuseScore helped them with the music notation learning process.

In your previous attachment it looks like you are accidentally add rests in between your notes. If you don't have any rests in between the notes you shouldn't have any problem adding 8 quavers in a measure of 4/4 time.

I'm not sure which version or operating system you are on, but if for some reason you are not using at least version 0.9.5 of MuseScore then you should upgrade. Instructions are on the download page of this website.

Here's another picture. I am using version 0.9.5.

If you look at the sheet music I'm trying to copy (in the first post) you'll see that I need 8 notes in the first measure and every other note starting with the first one is dotted.

In the picture below, you'll see when I add the seventh note to the measure, it bridges it into the next measure.

I'm inclined to believe in that case that the dotted notes are throwing it off, so what exactly am I doing differently than in the pdf version of the piece?

Thank you again for your time.

Thank you very much for all of your assistance.

In the end the closest thing I could get was to change the dotted quavers into regular quavers. Not ideal but it works well enough.

I appreciate you all taking the time to try and help me.

In your original PDF look at the second note and notice that is has two "beams" (thick horizontal lines). Notes with two beams or flags are called semi-quavers. In your screen shot you entered your second note as an eighth note (one beam). That is why you couldn't fit all the notes in the measure.

I would recommend reading about all the different types of note durations in music.
