Can't Save Files

• May 19, 2015 - 12:15

I just upgraded from an older version of musescore to 2.0.1. Every time I try to save a file I get a message saying:

Open Temp File
/Billie's_Bounce_Now's_the_TIme.mscz.temp
failed: Permission denied

I am running it on OS X 10.9.3.

Looks like that is a file that resulted from recovering from a previous crash. Do you know what caused the crash?

Anyhow, I am guesisng the problem is the "temp" in the filename. Do a save as and give it a valid filename - ending in MSCZ.

To my knowledge there wasn't a crash.

I tried to do a save as and named the file with MSCZ selected as the file type then got this message:

Open File
/Now's the Time.mscz
failed: Permission denied

Followed by this message:

Cannot write into /Now's the Time.mscz

If I try to save again I just get this message again

Open Temp File
/Billie's_Bounce_Now's_the_Time.mscz.temp
failed: Permission denied

I'm having the same issue where it will give me a "Permission Denied" message when I try, but nowhere I try to save to will it change. I really don't wanna lose all this work I did but it won't change, is there something i'm not following?

Can you post a screen shot of the permission denied message? My guess is it will be naming something other than the score itself, but instead a temp file, or it will be a different folder than you expect. This sort of thing can happen as the result of a previous crash, also if your file or the folder is marked read only, or perhaps if you disk is full. In any of these cases we should be able to lead you to a solution, but we'd need more information, hence the request for a screenshot.

I'm on a mac OS X 10.11.6. Slightly earlier version of a file saved but later version won't. Tried renaming, didn't help. Have gotten "permission denied" message and the like and had multiple crashes while trying to deal with the problem. At this point, an't seem to get "permission denied" message any more so can't reproduce it (sorry). Finally, afraid to reboot with chance of losing everything. I can fix up the earlier version but suspect that if I send it to my editor, he won't be able to download or open the file. Spotlight search can't find any version. Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks for catching that and your comments. Alas, the plot thickens. I un-installed the 32-bit version and installed the 64 version (below). The same issue remained when trying to save the file in /Documents or in /Musescore. However, something interesting happened when I tried to save it in C:. Musescore recommended saving the file in /Admin - which I did and the file did save there. Perhaps it's a permission issue. Beyond me :-)

OS: Windows 10 (10.0), Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 3.4.2.9788, revision: 148e43f

None of those are normal/valid pathnames in Windows. The default should be C:\Users\YourName\Documents\MuseScore3\Scores. Did you try going back to that? Can you post the precise full pathname of the folder you are having problems saving to, and the precise full text of the error message you see?

Thanks for your comments Marc. Understood. Here's my reply plus a screenshot:

Yes, I tried again and still cannot save the music files in these folders:
C:\Users\Admin\Documents
C:\Users\Admin\Documents\MuseScore2
// I suspect the Musescore2 directory is either a remnant of Musescore2 (my prev version) or was created when I installed Musescore3.

However, I am able to save them in:
C:\Users\Admin\
C:\Users\Admin\Musescore // A directory I created.

Thank you JoJo and Marc for your replies.

Yes, my username is "Admin" (which I had forgotten until you both reminded me). Yes, I could create a new text file using Notepad and could update it and save the updated file. Also could update it and save the updated file with a new filename.

With regards to a "Permissions problem" (which I'm not so familiar with on Windows), I've attached a screenshot listing the Permissions Properties of the Musescore2/Scores directly in case that might help.

And finally, I also tried re-starting my computer which didn't seem to help wrt to this inability to save updated files in Musescore2/Scores. Perhaps my computer is very special or picky ;-)

I noticed the same settings in MuseScore2 (identical to MuseScore2/Scores). Good point. I created a new Documents/MuseScore3 directory and noticed the same inability to save my files.

Perhaps it's a /Documents permission setting issue. Because, it seems I'm able to save files outside the /Documents directory. For example, I could save in ../Desktop

Because I chose to protect my folders from ramsomware, windows blocks any new applications from accessing my files unless i explicitly i allow them. Windows 10 warms me with a message, which I unfortunately ignored at first, but afterwards noticed and then allowed musescore to allow access to the storage folder it was trying to save my music into.
thanks for your sincere help.

Yes, I forgot to mention that I did check those permissions properties for the "problematic" /Admin/Documents and they look the same those in the screenshot I sent earlier. Likewise for Admin/Desktop (where I can save files). Well, at least, I have a work-around for now - staying outside of /Documents. :-)
