Change midi instrument midway in staff

• Dec 9, 2008 - 16:24

As violins sometimes play pizzicato, it should be possible to change midi-instrument midway in staff. My present solution: to have one staff for violin-arco, and one staff for violin-pizzicato, is not very elegant, and is troublesome when I want to extract parts. Certainly the arco passages and the pizzicato passages should be on the same staff.

This does not apply to instruments which do not normally have notation for playing technique. For example, I am trying to create a practice track for my jazz choir, and for playback purposes, I want to switch to a different voice sound mid-staff. I can also think of a for-instance in which someone (like me) would want to switch voice sounds mid-staff to distinguish between different roles in an opera upon playback. Midi files can change instrument sound mid-score, so it might be a command under "MIDI Action" in the Staff Text Properties window mentioned in the article you referenced, but I don't know enough about MIDI to suggest a fix. It's a start.

Meanwhile, you can create a customzied instruments.xml that combines the soinds you want into one instrument just as is done for the various violin sounds. Then upyou'll be able to change sounds via staff text.

One workaround is to create a part for any string instrument, then go to the mixer (M) and change the "arco" sound to, say, trumpet, and the "pizzicato" sound to trombone. Then, when the staff text tells it to play arco, it will sound like a trumpet, and pizzicato will sound like a trombone.
