Compatability of Version 9.5 and 9.6.1

I have MuseScore version 9.5, and a friend recently downloaded version 9.6.1. She can open pieces I send her with no problem, but hers are garbled (notes missing, measures short of beats etc).
Is this a basic incompatibility of the two versions?
How do I update my version 9.5?
Would I have to download version 9.6.1? IF so, would all my work done in 9.5 be stable in the newer version?

MuseScore 0.9.6 adds some new features and so the file format needs to evolve. So MuseScore 0.9.5 can't open MuseScore 0.9.6 files without scrambling them. Next versions will just refuse to open a file created with a most recent version.
MuseScore 0.9.6(.1) should be able to open 0.9.5 files without problems.
Upgrading is easy. Uninstall MuseScore 0.9.5, download musescore 0.9.6.1 and install it.
