Score in V2.0.1 is a muddled mess on playback, too much reverb, can't change

• Jun 15, 2015 - 23:07

I have V1.3 and just installed V2.0.1. Opened up a score and played back ... yuck! Tempo was almost twice as fast and the reverb/chorus just made a groggy mess of mixed up mesmerizing sounds. Can't change it. The synthesizer with no config or Zita1 don't make a difference, still messed up. The dial settings don't appear to make a difference. Same score in V1.3 works fine. A new score on V2.0.1 does the same thing, literally a nightmarish reverb mess. What's going on?

I think it's the "slow string" sound you are using. It's a very artifical sound in both the default 1.3 soundfont and the default 2.0 soundfont, but it's *differently* artificial. The 1.3 "slow strings" are way too quiet and you can barely hear them, making the overall sound pretty top heavy. The 2.0 "slow strings" are much more prominent, causing the sound to be bottom heavy in this particular piece. Also, that particular sound does not cut off cleanly, giving the illusion of reverb. "Slow strings" is a more a synthesizer "pad" than something meant to be used for actual orchestral parts; that's why it doesn't cut off cleanly. Simply changing to a more realistic string sound like the regular "Strings" makes a big difference. Still pretty bottom heavy, but that's what's actually there in the music.

As for the tempo, it's correct in 2.0. I checked it against my metronome, and it's precisely 140 bpm, which is what the tempo text is actually set to despite saying 105 (see Tempo Properties in 1.3, or the Inspector in 2.0 - both agree 140 is the correct tempo. Not sure why 1.3 is playing it way too slow. Was this file imported from MIDI, perhaps?
