Measure numbers showing up in different positions

• Aug 14, 2010 - 01:09

So far I have put together 4 songs and on two of them when I have the measure number appear above each measure the numbers are at the right or end of each measure and in the other two the number appear at the beginning of each measure. I can't find a way to get the two that appear on the right side of each measure to appear on the left or beginning of each measure.

Steven, there are two places, where you should look.
You can adjust the bar number appearance here:
1.)
->Style->Edit General Style...->Numbers
Here you can adjust, how often you want the bar numbers to appear etc.
2.)
select one of your bar numbers and right-click with your mouse. Then select "Text Properties..."
There have a look at the section "Offset".
Make sure, all values here are set to 0 (zero)

[please notice: I am from Europe, so "bar number" is equivalent to your "measure number"]
[also notice: my screen shots are made inside the Mac version 0.9.6.1 of musescore software, so the first two screens might look slightly different from yours, but the functionality will be the same.]

I checked the offset in the text properties of a bar number in each of two songs that I am using to learn how to use this excellent app and all the values in both are set to 0. See the attached mscz files in lasconic's reply earlier.

Go to Tools > Edit General Style > Numbers, and check the Measure settings.

You’ll find that where numbers appear to the right of each bar, the setting is for numbering at an interval of 1.

If you want numbers to appear only at the left of each system, select “Every System” instead.

That works great if I only want bar numbers to show up only for each system and not above every bar/measure. That may not be how bar numbers are normally displayed. I have seen music where a bar/measure number shows up every 4 or so bars/measures. I would like them to show up above every bar/measure in this case. And I'm not understanding why I have two different pieces of sheet music with the same settings (or at least how it appears to me) but different positions of the bar/measure numbers.

Take a look at the attached screen captures of two different songs and the Style > Edit General Style... > Numbers settings for both songs. One songs has the bar/measure numbers appearing on the left side and the other one has them appearing on the right.

Very strange.

I noticed a discrepancy in the Measure Properties for the upbeat measures of each song.

For both songs, select the upbeat measure and go to Measure Properties. In the dialog box under "Other," there's a setting called "Add to Measure No." In one song, it's set to "1"; in the other, it's set to zero.

I'm not certain that what's going on is a consequence of that inconsistency, but thought it might be worth a shot.

That was it! Thanks for the help. I don't know why I didn't see that. I really like this program. I use another tab program and half the time I do up a piece of music so I can hear the tune as I'm learning it and it is not as easy to put a song together in that program but it is here.

I appreciate the time you have taken to help me figure this out.

In these cases I didn't want the short names of the instrument to show up at all. But your suggestion is good to know. I need all the help I can get as I am learning so thanks very much for also lending a hand at helping and teaching. This is where the internet pays off. Folks who don't even know each other helping each other out.

Steven.
