Editing sounfont

• Jul 2, 2015 - 01:47

Hi, Gang!!!

I wonder if someone could "light" my way to try to edit the sound of soundfont files.

I mean, I think it can be edit, Right? ???

Specifically, I want to edit the violin, viola, cello and double-bass sounds from the
"GeneralUser GS MuseScore v1.44.sf2" file because I feel those sounds start a little slow (which sounds like out-of-synchronization).

I think the same fact is the reason it is impossible to get a good tremolo effect for them.

Any help will be welcome.

Greetings!!!

Juan

You need a Soundfont editor to edit Soundfonts. Here are the links to a few:

Viena: www.synthfont.com/Viena_news.html
Polyphone: www.polyphone.fr/

Once you have these, they all pretty much work the same.
However, the problem you are having with the soundfont may not be possible to fix. The slow attack could be caused by there being an envelope on the attack. To see if this is the case go to an instrument (not a preset) and see if there is anything in the box titled 'Volume Envelope Attack' or something similar. If there is a number delete it and the slow attack is gone. However, it is likely that it is the samples themselves are the problem. In this case, the is nothing that can be done (unless you are willing to collect, edit and put in new samples or switch to a new soundfont).

Also in my experience *using* a variety of soundfonts (haven't tried editing one), there is a tradeoff to make here. The quicker the attack, the less legato the overall effect.

I tried with "Polyphone" and I failed to edit the soundfont file!!!

The only one parameter to change into violin, viola and cello voices is the "Volumen Envelope Attack", but I tested with four "new" values, 0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 and... Nothing changes!!!

I suppose it is about the samples itselves, so... Nothing to do!!!

Well, I will have to wait for a future new soundfont file with a better samples.

That's life!!!

No need to wait. Although GeneralUser GS is considered to particularly good for its relatively small size, there are many other soundfonts with much larger / better samples. Although as I mentioned before, I think your issue here isn't one of quality but a simple tradeoff between wanting a legato sound versus wanting fast notes to sound full volume. You can't have it both ways, so it's really just a matter of choosing which disadvantage you prefer to live with.
