One feature request that will help a lot of composers using musescore

• Aug 5, 2015 - 15:05

For the instruments part. (It makes no difference if it's all, common, early etc.) There's a whole list of instruments that is not really known. There should be a sound sample feature. Where if they select the instrument, before adding it into the score, there should be a button to click that will play a note (or rhythm) with that sound. Being an all around composer, I struggle to find various instruments, (like percussion) to match with the effects that are in my mind. The "sound sample" feature would help a lot.

There are hundreds of instruments defined in the instrument wizard but only 128 sounds in MuseScore by default. When you choose an instrument in the list, it's just mapped to one of these 128 sounds, we don't have sounds for the hundreds.

Probably there exist web sites out there with recordings of lots of different instruments for you to check out. Seems that sort of thing is outside the scope of what MuseScore really needs to be doing. After all, choice of an instrument for a score shouldn't based only on what the default soundfont built in to MuseScore happens to sound like.

Yes, of course. Why wouldn't I be? Just so you and the other person know you're not alone, and perhaps can discuss things together. It's also undeniable that a feature request has a much better chance if it's clear that people are independently asking for it, and cross-linking is a good way to document that fact.

I wouldn't hold your breath :)

Sourcing the correctly licenced samples for this would be a colossal task in itself, and would add a another layer of complexity to the code.

Given that a Google search usually provides the answer to this, I cannot see the development team currently implementing this, which, quite frankly ranks as a gimmick in my eyes.

There is still too much to do in correcting score layout issues for this to be taken up.

If you were to provide the samples and the necessary code, however, the development team might take a different view.
