Help requested with inputting figured bass

• Aug 8, 2015 - 15:59

I'm trying to recreate a figured bass exercise which I made using a different software. The figured bass exercises need to look similar to the way they are presented in the ABRSM music theory exam papers, as that is what I'm teaching.
The image I made in my old software is a good representation of how things should look, but I'd like to achieve the same using Musescore.
Here's the original:

Using Musescore 2's figured bass feature I have managed to create this so far:

I'm having problems in a few areas.

1) I can't work out how to input a suspension. The original shows a 4-3 suspension, which needs a short line between the 4 and 3 on a single bass note. If I press the hyphen key it jumps to the next note on the stave. I can add a line manually, but then how do I get the "3" to appear?

2a) In some places, the continuation line needs to continue because there are notes in the soprano which are part of the same chord, but I'm unable to do this e.g. after the first pause mark, the bass has a single C, but the continuation line should include the G and A in the soprano.

2b) I've attempted to get around the continuation line problem by simply adding them as "lines". However, I can't place them with 100% accuracy and need to align them horizontally - is this possible?

Hi again Shoichi,

I combined your excellent tips with another work around:

Where the lines/figured bass didn't have an associated bass note, I just added them to the top stave instead and then pulled them down into alignment.

I think this works pretty well! I needed to adjust the default vertical position of both the lyrics and figured bass so that it fits. Thanks for your help!

It doesn't work though - the line is not continued.
It works if you continue a line underneath 2 or more notes on the same stave.
But where there is one bass note quarter note and two 8th notes in another part, the line will not extend to reach the subsequent 8th notes.
