How to select all but lyrics

• Aug 11, 2015 - 19:07

I have some mens choir condensed score. So tenor 1 is voice 1 on the upper staff. Tenor 2 is voice 2 on the same staff.

For part of the music all tenors sing the same notes. Therefore, I want to copy over the notes (and rests) from voice 1 to voice 2.

Well, I thought I just select the notes in voice 1, copy them the clipboard (^C), change the selected notes and rests from voice 1 to voice 2, and copy the notes back to the staff.

This works, but...

When I select the notes the lyrics get selected too. So, they get copied over too.

There used to be a possibility to select items and add to selection in a menu/submenu item. Problem is that I can't find it anymore. And I don't see any way to just select the notes&rests in one staff in one voice.

Am I missing something?

Any help appreciated.

I think you are probably talking about the Select / More... dialog. That will allow you, for example, right click a lyric that has already been pasted and then select the other lyrics in that same voice, and delete them.

But the more direct to do this in the future - ie, before you have already done the paste - is to use View / Selection Filter to exclude the lyrics from the selection before you do the copy in the first place.

Mark,

Right, but I couldn't find the Select / More dialog anymore...

There is Edit > Select All
and Edit > Select Section

Ahhh, got it, it's only in the right mouseclick pop-up menu.

Well, your suggestion didn't work.. If I only select voice 1, then copy to clipboard.
After that, when I move voice 1 to voice 2 I loose all the lyrics.

After some experimenting:
mark select voice 1 & lyrics
Edit > select selection
Mark the staff holding down the left mouse button
copy to clipboard
Edit > voices > exchange voice 1 and Voice 2 (loosing the lyrics)
Select first measure
Paste (and getting back lyrics too)

It would be nice if the selection filter would also be able to select the staff.

Anyway, thanks for the advice,

Rob.

I think you may have misunderstood my suggestions. I gave you two *separate* suggestions. The first (Select / More in the right click menu) was how to delete the lyrics in one voice only and was meant to help you with the situation you described now that you have already copied and pasted the lyrics along with the notes. Following those steps results in your being able to delete the copied/pasted lyrics while leaving the originals.

The second - totally separate - suggestion was how to avoid copying and pasting the lyrics in the first place. It's specifically what you asked for in the title - how to select all but lyrics.

It seems you may inadvertently combined steps from both of them into a single set of steps, or otherwise done something different from what I described. Hard to say for sure, but what you describe having done does not match either of my suggestions.

If you are still having trouble, please post the specific score you are having problems with and *precise* step by step instructions to reproduce the problem. We'll be able to show you how to get the job done.
