playback sound
Suddenly, for no apparent reason I get no sound with my playback. Speakers functioning fine for DVDs CDs etc, just not with musescore. Sound familiar?

It does, I'm afraid. I'm guessing that when you open the Synthesizer you see no SoundFont loaded. Try reverting to factory settings.
And if that doesn't work, please say what OS you are on, tell us what soundfont(s) you see load in in View / Synthesizer, and what settings you have in Edit / Preferences / I/O. And tell us what version of MuseScore, what might have changed since it was working before (eg, did you install a new version?)
