Staff spacing adjusting to volta brackets

• Nov 21, 2015 - 18:01

I've started using MuseScore after an online abc notation converter went down. I've adjusted several layout settings up until now, trying to make the notation look like that converter. There is one thing I can't seem to overcome, though.

The online abc notation converter I used, adjusted the staff position according to there being volta brackets or not in the sheet. If such brackets were present, the above staff would be a bit further away to accommodate the set space used by the volta brackets below. That means the space between staff would be increased where there were volta brackets, making for a different spacing between the staffs in question. This was an automatic feature.

As it stands now, I've elevated the volta brackets a bit (in my current style) as to not touch the chord symbols I use. That makes the volta brackets touch low notes and their beams on the above staff.

Is there a way to force the space between relevant staffs to increase when volta brackets are getting too close? Or do I have to uniformly increase the distance between all staffs?

At the moment there is no automatic way to do this, I believe. I'm not sure how high up the list of priorities this is. (I'm a user).

As far as I can tell, standard music engraving would *not* add extra space between staves to accomodate voltas. Instead, you'd have the voltas close enough to the staff and/or the overall staff distance be enough to not require extra space. So I'd focus on tweaking your style settings to not require such high voltas (eg, move chord a little closer to staff, voltas correspondingly lower). If it ends up still colliding with notes, consider a larger value for minimum system distance. Or, use spacers as suggested, but again, I don't think this would be standard engraving practice.

Thanks for all the help!!

Hm... Seems those manually operated staff spacers are the closest thing to what I want at the moment. By using them in relevant places I can easily make a wee bit of extra distance between staffs so as to "free" a beam from a touching volta bracket. Would probably be even better to have an option to set a margin for something like this, but for me it works well enough as it stands now.

Not really sure what "minimum system space" means though. I set the "max system space" low, so as to place the staffs closer...

Minimum and maximum mean just what they say. MuseScore will make the distance between systems no less than the minimum, and no more than the maximum. In practice what this means is MuseScore first figiures out how many systems it can fit on a page at the minimum distance. Once it has figured that out, it then spread the systems out until the page is full (eg, "bottom justifying" the page) or until the distance hits the specified maximum.

So again, to get the standard result with all systems equally spaced but with enough room for the volta, you would simply increase the minimum to be enough to clear the voltas - but really, I would also be looking at moving the chord symbols and voltas closer to the staff.
