Voices Not Working (I Think)

• Nov 23, 2015 - 20:54

I'm trying to follow (to a "T") the instructions about Voices in the Handbook. In a measure in which I plan to have two voices, I first enter the upper voice notes, which seems to default to Voice 1 (although Voice 1 is not highlighted in the Toolbar...because it's the default voice?) (This could be beneficially added to the Handbook.) The measure looks like this:

I then return to the beginning of the measure. I click Voice 2 in the Toolbar. If only the first note (already-entered in Voice 1) is selected before I do this, I then see:

The beam of my first 4 notes has been disrupted. If I click on the rest above the first note, Voice 1 is highlighted in the Toolbar, leading me to believe that the first note has been moved to Voice 2. This is NOT what I want.

So then I hit Undo and try again. Instead of clicking on the first note before selecting Voice 2, I highlight the entire measure. When I click Voice 2 in the Toolbar, I then see this:

MS Screenshot 3 (11-23).png

The notes I had first entered have now all been moved to Voice 2.

This seems to contradict the procedure outlined in the Handbook. Am I missing something?

With gratitude for someone's expert assistance,
Doug

I think you may be right and the manual (https://musescore.org/en/handbook/voices-0) needs to get amended for 2.0, it seems to have stayed at how it worked 1.x. Selecting a note in voice 1 and then switching to voice 2 flips that note to voice 2. Instead at the end of the measure, after having entered all notes in voice 1, switch to voice 2, then enter notes at the start of that measure

I think it's correct—as long as you don't leave note input mode in between "Start by entering the top voice," "use the ← key to move your cursor back to the beginning of the staff (or measure)," and "Click on the "Voice 2" button." That should be made more clear, though. I'll see what I can do.
