Same as in other recent releases - go to Staff Properties and delete the long name.
MuseScore V 1, Windows XP
I rightclick on a measure, select STAFF PROPERTIES, highlight the name of the instrument under PART PROPERTIES and hit DELETE on the keyboard. APPLY and OK. It works for me!

Thanks. Normally I did a simple left-click on the name and press DEL on the sheet. I never used this dialog before in the last release (0.9.6.3). It's a great pity that this simple deletion doesn't work anymore.

While I agree it's an on an occasional slight annoyance, surely this is not something anyone would need to do very often? If you've got some particular application for which it makes sense not to display an instrument name - like, say, a leadsheet, or a piece for piano only - why not just use the templates that are already set up that way? Or set up your own if whatever it is you are doing isn't covered by an existing template? The only time yo should ever have to delete instrument names manually is when creating a new score from scratch because there is no template for that type of score, and your score happens to be of a type that shoudn't display instrument names.
