Can't adjust trumpet volume

I am using a modified GeneralUser GM soundfont with imported trumpet samples. They are okay, but they are really loud and always overpower everything else playing, even if I adjust the volume in the mixer. I tried switching to a different set of samples but still always really loud. Any ideas of how to fix this? The other instruments can be adjusted just fine.
