High Notes aren't playing back

• Jan 15, 2016 - 03:11

I'm really confused right now. In my orchestral score, I have the violins part go to a high C# (C#7). This note is dark yellow so it is in the professional range. But, once the notes go above C7 on violins, there is no sound playing back. Can someone please explain why this is.

Thx.

Presumably the soundfont you are using does not includes samples that go that high. You can try a different soundfont as shown in the Handbook under "Soundfont". FWIW, the default soundfont (FluidR3) goes up to a G7, so I'm assuming you had switched to something else already.

I've just checked the ranges in the soundfont.

The Violin instrument goes up to G7 (MIDI #103) thus covering the full professional range.

The Strings instrument, which is what is used for the Violins section stops at C7 (MIDI #96), which does not.

Normally you wouldn't expect an orchestral violin section to go higher, but there are always a few composers which insist on pushing the boundaries.

Thing is that playing these very high notes is virtuoso stuff, which most section players, although highly competent violinists, are not.

Wikipedia suggests the practical limit for section players is E7 so I will extend the range to that on the strings instrument, unless I'm provided with documentary evidence that section violinists are reqquired to go higher.
