Help with instruments.xml

• Mar 10, 2011 - 17:41

Hi there,

New to musescore and I'm currently trying to put something together for my band. However, musescore does not have any sousaphones to choose from. After browsing through the forums, I've read multiple advice to just make a new .xml file with sousaphone manually added.

I've opened the .xml file and have a couple of questions

E Tuba/Sousaphone
E Tu.
4
28-58
22-72

58

I am guessing 4 means bass clef since most of the low brass instrument has the value 4 in the line. But what does aPitchRange, pPitchRange, and program mean?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Sorry, didn't know the < brackets don't show up.

(clef) 4 (/clef)
(aPitchRange) 28 - 58 (/aPitchRange)
(pPitchRange) 22 - 72 (/pPitchRange)
(program) 58 (/program)

Thank you!

I saved the new .xml file to include the sousaphone with the following code:

(clef)4
(aPitchRange)28-58
(pPitchRange)22-72
(program)59

The line for the Eb sousaphone is still behaving as though it is a C instrument.

Example:

The song I'm writing the flute part has 3 flats (Eb), therefore the sousaphone part should have 0 flats (C), however, when I pasted a trombone part into the tuba part, it still shows up with 3 flats, even after attempting to transpose it into C major.

Any help would be appreciated.

You need to tell MuseScore that you wish the sousaphone to be a transposing instrument. Look a the other tranposing instruments in instruments.xml to see how to do that, or just set the transposition afterwards in the staff properties.
